Running is truly a global sport, and New York Road Runners is delighted to support youth running throughout the world. Our current international partners in youth running are JAG Sports and Education Foundation, Great Ethiopian Run, Zara's Center, and Dili City of Peace Marathon.
JAG Sports and Education Foundation of South Africa partners with New York Road Runners to provide Mighty Metres, a running program that encourages children of all fitness and athletic levels to stay active and have fun. Since its launch in May 2007, the Mighty Metres program has motivated nearly 25,000 children in primary schools a year in the Western and Eastern Cape to start running.
Great Ethiopian Run (GER) hosts many races throughout Ethiopia and through a new partnership with New York Road Runners GER is launching an exciting youth running program, Sport for Success. The program serves disadvantaged areas of Addis Ababa through formally coached, youth running programs. Sport for Success aims to enhance physical heath, emotional well-being, and personal achievement, all while allowing children to have fun together.
Zara's Center is a model respite program for children orphaned by HIV/AIDS in Zimbabwe. Its connection with New York Road Runners began as a charity partner with the ING New York City Marathon. Zara's Center is taking the partnership one step further by working with New York Road Runners to provide the kids of Zara's Center with Mighty Metres, a running program that encourages children of all fitness and athletic levels to stay active and have fun.
Dili City of Peace Marathon partnered with New York Road Runners to encourage youth distance running in Timor-Leste. Almost 5,000 children ran in the Run for Peace, gaining added exposure to the world of running. The coaching videos available at New York Road Runners' A Running Start site are being distributed to schoolteachers and coaches in Dili as well as on TV.
