Miles for Books

In support of the National Education Association’s annual Read Across America celebration, New York Road Runners (NYRR) will provide up to 500 books to individual Mighty Milers sites according to the mileage they walk or run in official Mighty Milers sessions from March 1 to March 31, 2012 (the “Promotion Period”) that is entered into the Mighty Milers Database by 11:59 p.m. EST on April 4, 2012. Mighty Milers sites accepted for the 2011-2012 program year that have been registered in the Mighty Milers Database by March 1, 2012 will be automatically entered in the Miles for Books Promotion and will be eligible to receive books.

There are four (4) levels of books available:  50, 100, 250, and 500 books. Each pre-packaged set contains popular fiction and non-fiction titles for an assortment of ages. The first three levels of books will be distributed based on a site’s mileage average per student during the Promotion Period, as follows:

50 Books

To receive 50 books, a site's registered Mighty Milers need to average the following each week:
  • A half (.5) mile per student for adaptive P.E. and pre-kindergarten through first grade
  • One (1) mile per student for second grade and above

100 Books

To receive 100 books, a site’s registered Mighty Milers need to average the following each week:
  • Between three-quarters (.75 ) mile and 1.24 miles per student for adaptive P.E. and pre-kindergarten through first grade
  • Between two (2) and 2.99 miles per student for second grade and above

250 Books

To receive 250 books, a site’s registered Mighty Milers need to average the following each week:
  • 1.25 or more miles per student for adaptive P.E. and pre-kindergarten through first grade
  • Three (3) or more miles per student for second grade and aboved

A site may qualify for only one of the above levels of books, i.e., a site entitled to 100 or 250 books will not also be entitled to receive the lower level(s) of books.

500 Books

Only one (1) site will receive 500 books. All sites that reach mileage levels qualifying for 250 books will be eligible to receive the highest level of 500 books. NYRR will contact all eligible schools via e-mail by April 9, 2012, inviting them to submit by e-mail by April 13 a statement detailing how their school used the Miles for Books Promotion to motivate, increase, or enhance March running sessions and, if they wish, photos of their students running or showing enthusiasm for the promotion ("the "Submission"). The selection of the site to receive the additional 250 books, for a total of 500 books, will be made by a panel of senior staff of NYRR's Youth and Community Services Division, based on the panel's evaluation of all eligible sites' mileage averages and the sites' respective Submissions.

NYRR reserves the right to reject any Submission for any level of books that, in its opinion, was not properly submitted.

NYRR will alert winning sites by e-mail on or before May 1, 2012.

Scholastic will ship pre-packaged sets to sites that earned books by May 1, 2012. Books will be sent to the school/site address listed in the Mighty Milers Database.
